Parents Group Gives Harris/Walz an “F” on School Choice

In the midst of the Democratic National Convention, national school choice organization says VP Harris and Governor Walz have track record prioritizing teachers’ unions over parents and students

WASHINGTON, DC – In the midst of the Democratic National Convention this week, Invest in Education Coalition, an organization advocating for school choice, handed out an “F” rating to Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for what the group says is a well-documented record of siding with the teachers’ unions and opposing expansion of parental choice in K-12 education.

The National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers’ union which strongly opposes school choice, has given the Vice President an “A” rating.  In 2017, Harris opposed an amendment to provide support for tuition at K-12 schools for working and low-income families. She also criticized Trump’s 2016 campaign promise to empower parents to access the highest quality, most suitable schools for their children through school choice.

Governor Tim Walz has a similar record in opposing school choice. According to EdChoice, a non-partisan organization advocating for school choice across the country: “Gov. Tim Walz does not have a history of supporting educational choice in Minnesota… He also has a history of declining meetings with educational choice parent advocates.”Governor Tim Walz has been on record calling school choice programs a “scheme”, despite it being an issue that is supported by more than 70 percent of voters, including large majorities of African American and Hispanic voters.

Anthony J. de Nicola, Chairman of Invest in Education Coalition, says Harris and Walz prioritize special interests over parents and students:

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz have opposed empowering parents and giving children the opportunity to get the education of their choice and has defended the educational status quo, which has hurt students across the country. We need strong leaders who will fight to expand school choice so that every child, regardless of their ZIP code, has a chance at a great education. Instead, Harris and Walz are bankrolled by the teachers’ unions and are prioritizing special interests over parents and their children.”

Invest in Education Coalition will continue to support bold school choice legislation, particularly the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), a bill that would provide K-12 scholarships for as many as two million students across America to attend schools that best meet their educational needs.
