Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Congressman John James (R-MI-10) joined local parents in Warren, Michigan, at a press event, “Empowering Parents, Putting Students First”, hosted by Invest in Education Coalition, a national organization dedicated to advancing school choice at the federal level to discuss the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA). This new legislation that Rep. James has sponsored is designed to expand access to school choice for children nationwide by funding K-12 scholarships through private donations that cover essential elements such as tuition, tutoring and special needs services.

The event also featured testimony from several other school choice advocates. Here are highlights of what participants shared at the event:

U.S. Congressman John James (R-MI-10):

“A quality education is a moral imperative. It’s a basic civil right, and we must fight to protect it. As math and reading scores continue to decline, those are just the quantitative metrics, but mental health issues are skyrocketing because there’s hopelessness that’s running rampant amongst generations who do not see a brighter future. We have to address that by giving them opportunity through education. I firmly believe that when you give parents a choice, you give children a chance, and it shouldn’t be up to anybody else who get in the way of that, certainly not the government.”

Tony De Nicola, Invest in Education Coalition:

“John knows firsthand how important school choice is to every person. He’s now a Congressman in Washington, and I tracked him down in D.C., and he quickly got on our bill, and I’m delighted for that. He’s been a stalwart in teaching other legislators in D.C. about the importance of school choice and the Educational Choice for Children Act, which he’s been a great workhorse in getting other sponsors onto our bill. And as the proud parents of three young boys, John and his lovely wife, Elizabeth, know that America’s future generation must be protected and given education that best fits their needs, and that is why he’s a co-sponsor of the Educational Choice for Children Act.”

Beth DeShone, Great Lakes Education Project:

“While there are some barriers at the state level to providing publicly supported private school options in Michigan, it’s a shame that Governor Whitmer has vetoed multiple attempts to support Michigan students via former attempts for tutoring grants, summer school support and Educational Savings accounts. Those programs would have been transformational to Michigan students who continue to struggle in a system that is not designed to meet their unique needs. That’s why this Educational Choice for Children Act is such an exciting opportunity to change the dynamic here in Michigan and provide families with supplemental support for their children’s education. This legislation would allow families to pay for things like tuition, tutoring and many other educational enrichments that they desperately need to set their children on the best paths for a successful future.”

Michelle Smith, Parent Advocate, Sterling Heights

“We found a school that fits those needs for us. It’s a sacrifice, it’s tuition costs, it’s books, it’s extracurricular activities, all of these things that we have to cover, and it’s a sacrifice for us as parents. But for us, it’s the most important thing we can do as parents, is give our kids the best start […] This bill would be an excellent opportunity for other families who might not be able to afford to send their kid to a private school to have that opportunity.”

Monica Radico, Parent Advocate, Clinton Township

“I support public schools, but I also support parents making the best decisions for their children. […] Parents should have educational freedom if they feel their school is not meeting the needs of their children. The Educational choice for Children Act will allow parents to make the best educational decisions for their children.”
