New Legislation Could Help Thousands of Nevada Students Access Schools of Their Parents’ Choice

U.S. Senator Tim Scott, Invest in Education Coalition and Great Opportunity Policy discussed new legislation in Las Vegas, Nevada today with local parents

Las Vegas, Nevada – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) addressed local parents today in Las Vegas, Nevada, at a press event, “Empowering Parents, Putting Students First”, hosted by Invest in Education Coalition, a national organization dedicated to advancing school choice at the federal level, and Great Opportunity Policy, an organization focused on promoting opportunity and policies that empower parents to choose the best educational future for their children, prior to his remarks at the Republican Jewish Coalition Leadership Summit.

The Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), new legislation that Sen. Scott has sponsored, is designed to expand access to school choice for children nationwide by funding K-12 scholarships through private donations that cover essential elements such as tuition, tutoring and special needs services. ECCA has more than 150 House co-sponsors and more than 30 Senate co-sponsors, which Sen. Scott says is the most support for any congressional school choice legislation ever introduced.

According to EdChoice, Nevada’s Educational Choice Scholarship Program allows corporations to claim a 100 percent non-refundable state tax credit for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations (SGOs), but serves fewer than 2,000 students. The ECCA is a federal scholarship tax credit that could be stacked on top of Nevada’s existing program and, importantly, would help thousands of additional students. ECCA scholarships could be used fortuition, tutoring, special needs services, education technology, or curriculum materials. Students who wish to attend private or public schools could benefit.

A recent national survey shows more than 70 percent of voters across all demographics support school choice for all students.

“It is an honor to join Invest in Education Coalition and Great Opportunity Policy on the road to advocate for choice in education,” said Sen. Tim Scott. “By giving parents a choice, students have a chance. We must ensure every child in every zip code has access to a quality education. It was great talking with parents, students, and leaders about the impact a choice in education has on their families and what it means for the next generation.”

Anthony J. de Nicola, Chairman of the Board of Invest in Education Coalition, said:

“This legislation is crucial for expanding access to quality education, empowering parents, and providing students with the opportunities they deserve. Parents should have the tools they need to make the right choices for their children’s future and bringing this issue to the national level will allow students across America to access the school or services that best fit their needs, chosen by their parents.”
