Opinion: Families know best, give them the choice of which school their student attends

I have spent years of my career working to strengthen South Carolina families, and one of the best ways to do that is to ensure our children have the best opportunities for success by ensuring they attend the school that is best for them.

That is why Congress must pass the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA). This landmark legislation would empower parents — not a system as simple as a zip code — to decide what educational path is best for their children. It would open doors for millions of students nationwide, offering them the opportunity to thrive in the setting that best fits their needs, values, and God-given potential.

Our options are limited in the Palmetto State, with school choice not being on the table for many. We have certainly made meaningful strides in our state to expand our school choice options, but there is still a long way to go. To me, that is unacceptable. Giving parents the power to pick the best education option for their child’s needs is not just a good policy but a moral imperative.

Too many parents, particularly those with limited financial means, are trapped in a one-size-fits-all education system that doesn’t properly serve their children. The ECCA would help change that by unlocking $10 billion annually in tax credits for individuals and businesses to support scholarship-granting organizations across the country. These scholarships would give families the resources to choose from a variety of options, including public, private, public charter, technical, or faith-based schools.

Above all else, it is important to recognize that no two children are the same. Some thrive in traditional classrooms, while others need smaller environments or hands-on training not typically offered in the public school system. The ECCA would give families the freedom to make that decision for themselves.
