Helping families, kids find best educational pathway should be top policy priority

Every student is unique and the options available to them should reflect that; some thrive in traditional public schools while others excel in homeschooling, private institutions, charter schools or specialized programs that better cater to their learning styles.

School choice has been rapidly expanding across the country, filling the gaps that a public education cannot. There have been great strides taken in Louisiana like the “Giving All True Opportunity to Rise” (GATOR) scholarship program which provides education savings accounts (ESAs) to families across the state regardless of income level. Still, these programs are not enough to ensure that every child has access to the best education for them.

It is time to pass a federal program that can help students regardless of what state they live in. Congress has a bill before them, the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), that can fill in the gaps in educational opportunities that families overwhelmingly support.

Nearly three quarters (74 percent) of voters favor school choice where parents are allowed to choose the public, private or technical trade school they send their children to – and the ECCA is a crucial step in giving families the options they need. This bill would provide tax credits for individuals and businesses that donate to scholarship funds, enabling more families to afford private and alternative K-12 educational options.

This bill means no increase in taxes, as it relies on charitable contributions that will allow opportunities for the families that need it the most. The ability to choose a school that aligns with our children’s unique needs without being restricted by financial barriers is the chance that every family deserves.
