ICYMI: Former President Donald Trump Would Support Nationwide School Choice Legislation Upon Election

October 22, 2024

Trump calls school choice “one of the biggest things on [his] platform”

WASHINGTON, DC – In case you missed it, former President Donald Trump expressed his support for national school choice legislation in an appearance on Fox & Friends on October 18. During the interview, President Trump said, “School choice is one of the most important things that we are going to be doing.”

When asked if he would support “a bill that just passed the Ways and Means Committee,” the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), designed to expand access to school choice for children nationwide, President Trump said:

“I would sign it. Anything to do with school choice, I’ll support.”

Anthony J. de Nicola, Chairman of Invest in Education Coalition, said of President Trump’s statement of support:

“It is very encouraging to see former President Trump once again boldly supporting this critical issue for American families. Parents should have the tools they need to make the right choices for their children’s future, and President Trump is responding to the demands of America’s parents to provide their children with the educational options they need to succeed.”

President Trump has been a vocal champion for school choice during the lead-up to the presidential election on November 5. In an interview earlier this year, President Trump said that he is a “big fan” of school choice. And yesterday, President Trump promised to “deliver universal school choice, empowering every parent,” which is a part of the 2024 Republican Platform.

This is a sharp contrast to Vice President Kamala Harris, who has strongly opposed school choice and who is backed by teachers’ unions and bureaucrats working to protect their own power. According to William La Jeunesse on Fox News, “For some families, this is not a sleeper issue, it is a difference maker. […] Trump supports it, Harris does not.”

In September, the ECCA, which has more support than any previous federal school choice bill, passed out of the House Ways & Means Committee and now heads to the House Floor.

The ECCA would expand parental access nationwide to schools of choice for their children by creating a federal income tax credit to fund K-12 scholarships from private donations for education expenses, including tuition, tutoring, special needs services, education technology, or curriculum materials.
