ICYMI: Gov. Polis Makes the Case for Federal Scholarship Tax Credit as New Poll Shows Broad, Bipartisan Support

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In case you missed it, in a recent appearance on Fox News, Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D-CO) highlighted the benefits of the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program and argued that more governors should recognize the opportunity it presents for students and families.

In the interview, Polis defended his decision to opt Colorado in to the program, emphasizing that it will bring additional resources to nonprofits that help kids without requiring state resources. “This was an even easier decision because there are zero state resources on the line,” Polis said.“It’s all additional resources to nonprofits that help kids.”

Polis has also pushed back on the idea that the program should be viewed solely through the lens of private school choice. He said the tax credit could bring “more educational services to more kids,” including tutoring, summer learning opportunities, and special needs services.

That message from Polis is particularly relevant as new national polling shows that voters overwhelmingly agree that states should participate in the program. A new Morning Consult poll commissioned by Invest in Education Coalition found that 67 percent of registered voters support their state participating in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program, including 70 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of Independents, and 67 percent of Republicans.

The poll also found that 89 percent of voters believe families need educational resources beyond what school budgets provide, while 72 percent say it is important for governors to opt their states in to the program by the January 1, 2027 deadline. Perhaps most notably, 63 percent of voters became more supportive of the program after learning that public school students can also benefit through services such as tutoring, after-school programs, educational technology, and other academic supports.

The findings reinforce Governor Polis’ argument that the program is about expanding educational opportunities for students. With 30 states now opted in and 20 states and Washington, D.C. still deciding whether to participate, governors across the country face a straightforward choice: make these additional resources available to families in their states or allow these private charitable dollars to flow to other participating states.

As Governor Polis put it, “For me, it’s about opportunity.”
