Momentum Continues To Grow For School Choice Nationwide

In case you missed it, the push for universal school choice is continuing across the country, with several prominent advocates encouraging action from lawmakers that would give students the ability to pursue the education option that is best for them.

Earlier this month at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, former United States Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice spoke of the importance of giving families of all financial backgrounds the ability to send their children to schools that will provide them with the best educational outcomes. She said:

“Are you for school choice, or not? We already have a choice system in education. If you are of means, you will move to a district where the schools are good and the houses are expensive, like Palo Alto, California. If you go across the street from Stanford, Palo Alto High has a performance arts center that looks like a smaller version of Stanford’s. If you are really wealthy, you will send your kids to private school. So, who is stuck in failing neighborhood schools? Poor kids. A lot of them are minority kids. So, how can you say you are for civil rights? How can you say you’re for the poor, when you are condemning those children to not being able to read by the time they are in third grade?”

On Capitol Hill, U.S. Representative Burgess Owens (R-UT-04) met with school choice advocates and shared his support. He tweeted:

“The momentum behind school choice is growing thanks to the relentless advocacy of  @SchoolChoiceNow, @Invest_InEd, and so many others. We’re in this fight together—for our students and for our nation’s future.”

In Philadelphia, Jay-Z also is stepping up in support of school choice in a new campaign to help local students afford private school. His entertainment company, Roc Nation, announced its support for the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success, a statewide legislative proposal that would create private school scholarships for low-income families. Roc Nation Managing Director of Philanthropy Dania Diaz said:

“We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s changemakers.”

Most recently, efforts like this one in Louisiana have proven to be successful. This past week, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry approved universal school choice for his state by signing the Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise Program, or the GATOR Scholarship. This legislation made Louisiana the 11th state to offer universal school choice, following in the footsteps of the success seen in states like Florida.

The best way to ensure success for children in all 50 states is  give all parents the power to choose the best educational options for their children. The Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) would  do this by creating a federal tax credit for donations to scholarship-granting organizations, thus establishing a private funding stream for scholarships  that cover essential elements such as tuition, tutoring and special needs services. We encourage lawmakers to join their 151 House and 31 Senate colleagues in supporting this legislation so that school choice can become a reality for hundreds of thousands more children.
