National School Choice Group Says Gov. Tim Walz Would Be A “Disaster” For K-12 Parents

Stark Contrast Between VP Candidates and Positions on School Choice

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of tomorrow’s vice presidential debate, Invest in Education Coalition, an organization advocating to empower parents to choose the best education for their children, presented clear differences between Republican vice presidential candidate Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate.Sen. Vance has supported crucial school choice legislation while Gov. Walz is on recordas opposing parental options for their children’s education, including calling school choice programs a “scheme”.

Senator Vance is a co-sponsor of the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), a bill that is designed to expand access to school choice for children nationwide by funding K-12 scholarships through private donations that cover essential elements such as tuition, tutoring, education technology, and special needs services. In a recent interview on Fox & Friends, Sen. Vance stated, “School choice actually is necessary to give parents the ability to give their kids a good education.”

By contrast, Governor Walz rejected a compromise with Minnesota Republicans to include tax credit scholarships in a school funding deal. According to the Washington Post, Gov. Walz responded to Minnesota Senate Republican Leader Paul Gazelka’s offer of compromise with: “You know I’m a member of Education Minnesota [the state teachers’ union], right?”

As the candidates prepare to face the nation Tuesday night, polls show that 76 percent of voters are more likely to support candidates who support school choice.

Anthony J. de Nicola, Chairman of Invest in Education Coalition, said “American families deserve leadership in Washington that supports empowering parents and creating opportunities for every student regardless of zip code. The contrast could not be clearer:  J.D. Vance supports parental choice and K-12 educational freedom, and Tim Walz does not.”

Invest in Education Coalition will continue to support bold school choice legislation, particularly the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), a bill that would provide K-12 scholarships for over one million students across America to attend schools that best meet their educational needs.
