National School Choice Legislation Introduced in Congress

With President Trump in the White House, school choice champions on the Hill are optimistic about passing the Educational Choice for Children Act

President Trump says “I would sign it”

Washington, D.C. – Today, Invest in Education Coalition (IIEC), a national organization dedicated to advancing school choice at the federal level, recognized National School Choice Week with an event hosted alongside Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) to highlight the introduction of the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA). This bicameral federal tax credit scholarship bill, which is being introduced by Senator Cassidy, Senator Scott, Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE-03), and Congressman Burgess Owens (R-UT-04), would enable K-12 parents of as many as two million students across the country to access a school or education service of their choice.

The ECCA would provide scholarships that are funded by private donations, not federal money, and donors would receive a federal tax credit. Students could use scholarships for tuition, tutoring, special needs services, education technology, or curriculum materials.

A recent survey shows nearly three quarters of voters favor school choice where parents are allowed to choose the public, private or technical trade school they send their children to.

President Trump has expressed his support for school choice. When asked recently on Fox and Friends whether he would support the proposed Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), President-elect Trump said, “I would sign it. Anything to do with school choice, I’ll support.” Now, the Invest in Education Coalition is encouraging members of Congress to join in the support so that the legislation can be passed this year.

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said:

“Parents want to see their child succeed. Giving them the ability to make decisions over their child’s education puts that child’s needs first. More freedom empowers parents and allows American children to thrive in school.”

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) said:

“When you give parents a choice, you give kids a better chance at achieving their dreams. By empowering families with more education resources and freedom, this bill will unlock opportunities that have been out of reach for students across America who deserve every chance to succeed and a schooling system that fosters their potential.”

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE-03) said:

“As we celebrate National School Choice Week across America, I urge my colleagues to stand with our nation’s K-12 parents and students and support the Educational Choice for Children Act. This crucial school choice bill will directly empower parents in every ZIP code to choose the school or education service that works best for their children.”

Congressman Burgess Owens (R-UT-04) said:

“We cannot accept that intellectual and educational failure of our own children is a norm. The Educational Choice for Children Act is a win for families and provides an opportunity for all students to reach their full potential. I look forward to working with my colleagues to provide more educational opportunities to parents and children throughout our country.”

Anthony J. de Nicola, Chairman of Invest in Education Coalition, said:

“As we celebrate National School Choice Week, it is more important now than ever before to advance policies like the Educational Choice for Children Act that empower parents and open doors for students nationwide. This legislation will ensure every child has the opportunity to access an education that fits their needs and aspirations. I urge Congress to take swift action to pass the ECCA to transform the future of education in America.”
