Report examines the Educational Choice for Children Act; advocates inclusion in reconciliation to expand school choice nationally

WASHINGTON, DC – report published this week by the American Enterprise Institute and authored by the Invest in Education Coalition (IIEC) discusses the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) that would expand school choice to children in all 50 states. With President Donald Trump in the White House and Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, the report states that this is “the best opportunity to enact federal private school choice legislation.”

Chairman of Invest in Education Coalition and co-author of the report Anthony J. de Nicola stated: “The Educational Choice for Children Act is about expanding school choice to children in all 50 states. Now is the moment for the Trump administration and Congress to respond to the millions of parents who desire better K-12 educational options for their children.”

The report, entitled Revisiting the Federal School Choice Agenda, notes that despite significant growth in state-level school choice programs, which now benefit more than one million students, nearly half of the nation’s elementary and secondary public school students reside in states without private school choice options, while other state choice laws are overly restrictive. According to a recent survey, nearly three quarters of voters favor school choice where parents are allowed to choose the public, private or technical trade school for their children.

Key points from the report include:

  • President Donald Trump’s reelection and supportive Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress present the best opportunity to enact federal private school choice legislation.
  • The ECCA is the only near-term means to expand school choice in all 50 states.
  • The ECCA uses the tax code to encourage philanthropic support to expand educational freedom while avoiding increased federal spending, bureaucracy, and mandates.

President Trump stated in a recent post “I’ve made School Choice a priority of my Administration. We need School Choice passed in every State!” Asked on Fox and Friends whether he would support the proposed ECCA, he said, “I would sign it.”
