School Choice Takes the Stage at the GOP Convention

Educational freedom allies throw weight behind federal action

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week at the Republican National Convention (RNC), educational choice was a topic of discussion among speakers. Support has been continually growing for universal school choice, a policy that became part of the official Republican Party platform. Twelve (12) states have passed programs to empower parents and students with many more having legislation in the works, showing increased attention from the state level up to the national stage.

U.S. Representative Byron Donalds of Florida stated, “My mother took me out of public school because she could see that public education was failing me. I needed to be challenged, and I needed the opportunity that only a private school could provide. My mother is an educator, and she truly believed in my potential, but Democrat politicians wanted to trap me in a failing school. But my mom fought for me.”

Rep. Donalds, along with vice presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance, are two of over 180 members of the House and Senate who are co-sponsors of the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA). This legislation would generate scholarships for use in K-12 education for as many as two million students across America to access the school or services, chosen by their parents, that best meet their educational needs.

Other supporters of school choice also took the stage at the RNC to echo the importance of school choice, including:

  • Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee here
  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas here
